SCIENCE WEEK 3rd and 4th class November 2018

Sound Vibrations:
This month we are learning about the workings of the 

human ear and how sound is made.

We experimented with how we hear sounds by making 

paper cup telephones out of string and cups.  When you 

pull the string taut the sound waves vibrate through it 

from cup to cup!

Mending a broken plate with warm milk:

 The idea is that the protein called casein in the milk expands when heated and forms a natural plastic and fills in the cracks. It then bonds with the surfaces and as it cools, becomes one with your china. We broke a plate and stuck it together with tape. Then we immersed it into a basin of warm milk for two days.

                                      
                                     


Kitchen Chaos!
Baking soda and vinegar:
When you mix these two ingredients together they cause a chemical reaction which releases gas.  We experimented to find out…


We put vinegar in a bottle and baking soda in a balloon. Then we fixed the balloon to the bottle and allowed the baking soda to fall in to the vinegar.  The reaction caused gas to be released which resulted in the balloon blowing up!!
 We put baking soda into a sandwich bag and quickly poured vinegar into it and zipped it up.  We stood back and watched the bag blow up with all of the gas.  The liquid started to spurt out of a tiny hole in the bag!
Caution: Do this experiment in a bath or outdoors as it is quite messy!!


  Bouncy Egg Lamp
When you soak a fresh raw egg in vinegar for 24 hours something amazing happens.  

The outer hard shell disintegrates leaving just the membrane of the egg holding it all 

together. This makes the egg seem “bouncy”.  We put the egg sitting on top of a phone 

torchlight and the result was beautiful-it looked like a lava lamp. You could see right through the egg and locate the yolk.







Coke Milkshake!!

When Coke is mixed with milk, the 

phosphoric acid goes to work 

and milk curdles into little clumps. 

What's surprising is what a change 

that reaction makes to the Coke. ... 

We're left with a bottle that is full 

of liquid made from Coke and milk 

juice, with the acid and protein 

clumped together and out of the way.

It looks disgusting!!

Maths Trail for Maths Week 2018!!

Our class spent this lovely Autumnal morning outside working on a Maths Trail for Maths Week 2018. We really enjoyed it. Here is what we did:               

                SCOIL BHRIDE MATHS WEEK MATHS TRAIL 2018

                          Now you're in your team. Get ready to go and best of luck!!!

1. Start at the front door. Walking in a clockwise direction, 
 (a) count the doors you can see (b) name 4 right angles, (c) 1 obtuse angle, (d) 1 acute angle, (e) 1 circle, (f) 1 rectangle, (g) 1 square.

2. On your trail, write down the letters you see stuck on the walls and unscramble them to reveal a mathematical shape!!

3. Make a 2D shape out of Autumn leaves and twigs in the square at the back of the school. Write the name of your shape and team name beside it. (Extra point for the best shape!)

4. Work out how many children could stand side by side along the white line at the centre of the big yard using only your team members.

5. Estimate the height of the school from Mrs Coyne’s back door.

6. Use your metre stick to measure the length of the big yard.

7. Count the steps at the back of the school. If a snail climbs up 3 steps each day and falls back 1, how long would it take him to reach the top?

8. Work out the perimeter of the Astro Turf using your metre stick. (Can you work out the area too?)

9. Look at the number plate on Mrs Fay’s car. Add up the digits on it. There are 4 more digits on the school building which will make the total add up to 43? What are these digits?

10. Add up all of the digits on the glass on the front door.

11. Work out the perimeter of one of the vegetable boxes. What is the total perimeter of all of the boxes? If you laid each piece of the frames out side by side how far would they stretch?

12. Look at the coloured picket fence. How many posts of each colour are there?

Hallowe'en Silhouettes

In 3rd and 4th we are getting ready for Hallowe'en. Today we made some spooky silhouettes!
We cut out a cat and a bat shape each. Then we stuck them to black/white paper with blu-tack. After that we sponge painted all around the shape with white/red/green/orange paints. We made sure to be careful not to get paint under the animal shapes.  
Then we slowly lifted the animal shapes off.
We love the end results and had great fun making them!

"Eggsperiment"

As part of our Living Things strand in Science, we are studying the teeth. We are learning about the parts of the tooth and what kind of effects various liquids have on the enamel of the tooth.  We carried out an experiment with hard boiled eggs over the course of a week to find out.( Eggshells react similarly to substances to tooth enamel.) The liquids we used were: water, milk, coffee, coke, diet coke and a concentrated orange drink. 


 After Day 1:

 Coke-(gritty texture on eggshell)
 Diet Coke-(a slimy coating on the eggshell)
 Orange juice from concentrate-this drink proved to be the most damaging to the eggshell therefore it is not the best thing to drink.
The shell blistered and weakened. We could actually scrape the eggshell off to reveal the white of the egg underneath!


 Quite shocking!
 The eggs left to right-water, milk, coffee, coke, diet coke, orange drink.
We discovered that the orange drink was most damaging so we examined its ingredients.
It contains:water
orange juice from concentrate (25%)
sugar
acidity regulator
citric acid
flavourings
antioxidant
ascorbic acid
sweetener
sucralose
colour: beta carotene

As you can see, this drink only contains 25% orange juice! 
We concluded that the other ingredients in this drink may damage the enamel on your teeth as eggshells and enamel react similarly to substances.
