Maths week 2015
As part of maths week 2015, children will be partaking in various maths games and activities in groups. They will be doing maths trails around the school which will encourage them to see how maths is part of everyday life and the environment.
Tag Rugby
To coincide with the Rugby World Cup 2015, 3rd and 4th class are playing Tag Rugby for the month of October during PE lessons. The children are warming up beforehand, splitting in to teams and having a great time perfecting their skills! Ireland Abú!!
When Science meets Art!
During September, we experimented with oil and water in Science. We did an experiment using water, food colouring and cooking oil. The result, as you can see in the photos, is that oil and water DO NOT MIX! No matter how much we tried to mix them, they always separated.
Our Science lesson progressed into an Art lesson using oil paints, white spirits and water. When oil paints are thinned slightly with white spirits, the various colours are dropped onto a tray of water and paper is carefully laid on the surface for a few seconds. The results are beautiful. This is another example of oil floating on top of water. We love our paintings!
Charcoal Drawings
On Friday 25th September, we did observational drawings. Mrs Fay brought a mystery bag full of objects to school and we had to put our hands in and pick an object to draw. There were household items such as cutlery, a jug, a teacup, a whisk as well as fruits, dried flowers and some children's toys in the bag. When we chose our object we had to examine the lines and angles on it and the textures of it. When we were ready to draw, we chose a charcoal or a pastel and drew it on white card. As we drew, we listened to soothing music by Mozart. We were allowed to do a few pictures. Our pictures were then sprayed with hairspray to stop them smudging and mounted on coloured card and displayed in our classroom. Do you like them?
Storytelling at Cavan Library
On Tuesday 13th October, 3rd , 4th and 5th classes travelled to Johnston Central Library Cavan. We went to listen to storyteller Pat Speight as part of Children's Book Festival 2015.
He was a really interesting scéalaí and told us lots of yarns and old stories and traditions. Here, he is showing us the old tradition of finding out who you will marry! You place your shoes in a T shape beside your bed and that night, as you sleep, your future spouse will appear in your dreams!!
