SCIENCE WEEK: Making a Paper Circuit-Live online workshop!!

We were very lucky to get one of the limited places on one of the Cavan Monaghan Science week live workshops this week.
We received a mystery box by courier and inside was an envelope for each of us.
A great man called Chris from "Makermeet" told us all about electrical currents-AC and DC. We learned that AC -alternating current such as in sockets is very dangerous and NOT to be tampered with.
DC-Direct Current is to be found in batteries and safe to use for our experiment.
We were going to make an actual circuit and light up a lighthouse!
Our envelope contained:

  • 1x Lighthouse Card
  • 1x CR2032 Battery
  • 1x LED (very small!)
The lighthouse card had a circuit made with copper tape. Copper is a CONDUCTOR for electricity. We learned about the +positive and -negative sides of the battery and LED. We had to follow Chris's instructions carefully to attach the LED and battery to our circuit. Then when we closed the card and pressed on the part of the circuit to make it connect, the light in the lighthouse lit up! Every single one in the class worked. We were so excited and delighted to have completed this project. Thanks Chris!

SCIENCE WEEK- Water drop Magnifier

As part of our lesson about LIGHT, we learned many new facts and new vocabulary such as bioluminescence, concave, convex, lens..
Did you know that a single drop of water can act as a lens and magnify letters and words to make them bigger? We made our very own magnifiers by laminating paper with a hole in the middle and putting a drop of water onto the clear plastic hole. We were amazed to see the letters getting bigger through the water drop lens.

LITERACY-Word Sorts

This week, we worked on the long a sound in the English language.
We had a different activity per pod and then we told the whole class about it afterwards.
We found so many ways to make this sound eg "eigh" is one way. The most unusual way we found to make the sound was in the word GAUGE!

Drama-Bullying-Stay Safe Programme

Last week we were learning about bullying in our Stay Safe programme. We did improvisations in our pods about scenarios involving bullying. We loved planning and acting out the scenes and we learned alot about how hurtful bullying is, how to step in and help others and how to stand up for ourselves.
