"Eggsperiment"

As part of our Living Things strand in Science, we are studying the teeth. We are learning about the parts of the tooth and what kind of effects various liquids have on the enamel of the tooth.  We carried out an experiment with hard boiled eggs over the course of a week to find out.( Eggshells react similarly to substances to tooth enamel.) The liquids we used were: water, milk, coffee, coke, diet coke and a concentrated orange drink.

 After Day 1:
Water
 Milk
 Coffee
 Orange
 Coke
Diet Coke (a strange colour on top)

 Day 4
Water
 Milk
 Coffee
 Coke
 Diet Coke
 Orange
 After 1 week
Water-(no change)
 Milk-(no change)
 Coffee-(badly stained)

 Coke-(gritty texture on eggshell)
Diet Coke-(a slimy coating on the eggshell)
Orange juice from concentrate-this drink proved to be the most damaging to the eggshell therefore it is not the best thing to drink.
The shell blistered and weakened. We could actually scrape the eggshell off to reveal the white of the egg underneath!

 Quite shocking!
The eggs left to right-water, milk, coffee, coke, diet coke, orange drink.
We discovered that the orange drink was most damaging so we examined its ingredients.
It contains:water
orange juice from concentrate (25%)
sugar
acidity regulator
citric acid
flavourings
antioxidant
ascorbic acid
sweetener
sucralose
colour: beta carotene

As you can see, this drink only contains 25% orange juice!
We concluded that the other ingredients in this drink may damage the enamel on your teeth as eggshells and enamel react similarly to substances.

Autumn Bug Hotel!

Some of the girls in our class constructed this bug hotel out of the fallen leaves and branches left from Storm Ali!

Word Sorts

Each week our class is looking at the various ways to make sounds in the English language and doing word sorts to examine the differences.
This week we looked at "Long e" sounds. It was very interesting.

Green Schools Science Experiment

Green Schools Science Experiment Three - Pipes
3rd and 4th class did a science experiment on blocked pipes.
Here is what happened.
They poured some water down an empty pipe and it took 10 seconds to travel down into a container.
Then they put some cotton wool into the top of the pipe and poured the same amount of water down. It took 3 mins 33 seconds.
Lastly they put a baby wipe in the pipe and poured the water down. It took 4 mins 8 seconds.
Here are the results.

NATIONAL SPRING CLEAN DAY

On Friday 27th April 3rd and 4th class went on their annual trip into Killeshandra for the National Spring Clean.  We split up in to 3 groups. Mrs O' Neill's group tidied up the Carrigallen road area and the footpath to the school.  Mrs Connolly's group tidied up the playground.  Mrs Fay's group tidied up the Town Lake area and the resource centre area.  It was a beautiful day and as you can see from the pictures the town looked splendid in the sunshine. We really enjoyed ourselves.

As part of our World War Two studies in SESE, we made fighter planes in Art using wooden pegs and lollipop sticks.
